As I have been researching for the book I’m writing, I came across Jp2’s Letter to Artists. I believe everyone should read it.
I’ve always loved art, I think it’s because it’s such an intimate expression of the artists and typically a response of God’s goodness. If you know me, you know I am a sucker for genuine and deep conversations where we can intimately express what’s happening in our lives. In that way, true friendship can be a work of art.
Are you an artist? I think many of you would say no. But in the words of JP2, “Not all are called to be artists in the specific sense of the term. Yet, as Genesis has it, all men and women are entrusted with the task of crafting their own life: in a certain sense, they are to make of it a work of art, a masterpiece.”
So basically, yes. Yes you are an artist.
All of us are called to create something beautiful with the gifts God has given us. Jp2 talks about the Holy Spirit’s role in sparking some creative mission within in: "Overseeing the mysterious laws governing the universe, the divine breath of the Creator Spirit reaches out to human genius and stirs its creative power. He touches it with a kind of inner illumination which brings together the sense of the good and the beautiful, and he awakens energies of mind and heart which enable it to conceive an idea and give it form in a work of art.”
I encourage you today to go to someplace quiet, put on your favorite praise and worship song, ask the Holy Spirit to point out within you what beautiful art he wants you to create for the world.
And then create! Make the world a more beautiful place!
Have you read the children's book "Miss Rumphius"? You should check it out. It's so cute - and of course, totally pertains to this post :)
